Wood fibre insulation is a natural material made from softwood offcuts, usually spruce or pine, bonded into rigid boards or flexible batts. It works like most insulation by trapping air, but with two properties that matter for older homes: it lets moisture pass through it, and it holds heat rather than just blocking it.
That second bit is the interesting part.
Most insulation slows heat transfer. Wood fibre does that too, but it also has what's called high thermal mass, meaning it absorbs heat during the day and releases it slowly at night. In practice, this makes rooms feel more stable, warmer in winter, cooler in summer. If you've ever been in a stone cottage that stays cool through a heatwave without air conditioning, you've felt this effect.
The boards come in different densities. Rigid boards (around 140-160 kg/m³) go on external walls and roofs. Flexible batts (around 40-60 kg/m³) fit between studs and rafters. There's also a wood fibre board designed for internal wall insulation on solid walls, which is where it really earns its keep.
And it's vapour-open, which is a fancy way of saying it lets your walls breathe. Traditional buildings, anything pre-1919 typically, were built to absorb and release moisture through their walls. Seal them up with plastic-based insulation and you can trap damp inside the fabric of the building. That's how you get mould, rotting timber, and blown plaster. Wood fibre works with the building instead of against it.
Wood fibre performs better on breathability and thermal mass, but worse on price and thermal conductivity per millimetre.

PIR wins on raw thermal performance per millimetre, so if you're insulating a shallow cavity or a floor where thickness matters, it does more with less. Mineral wool wins on price and it's fine for most lofts. Wood fibre wins on everything else that actually matters in a period property.
But here's what most guides won't tell you. The thermal conductivity figures don't capture how these materials perform in real houses over full days and seasons. Studies from the Centre for Alternative Technology and BRE have shown wood fibre outperforming its lab-tested U-value in summer because of the thermal mass effect. In winter, it's roughly on par with mineral wool at the same thickness. So the numbers on the packaging undersell it.
On fire performance, wood fibre is treated with natural fire retardants and typically rates Euroclass E. Not as good as mineral wool (Euroclass A1) or PIR when properly encapsulated, but adequate for most residential applications. Check the specific product data sheet.

Break that down by job type:
Material costs alone run £20 to £45 per m² for rigid boards. Labour is where most of the money goes, because wood fibre installation is more specialist than sticking up rockwool. You're often working with lime plaster finishes, breathable membranes, and detailed junctions around windows and eaves. Cutting corners here defeats the point.
Compared with mineral wool, expect to pay roughly double. Compared with an equivalent PIR external wall system, you're looking at a 30% to 50% premium.
Is it worth it? Depends entirely on the property. We'll come to that.
Yes, but the routes are narrower than for cheaper materials. ECO4 and Warm Homes: Local Grant are the main options, and neither will list wood fibre as a preferred measure.
ECO4 can fund wall and loft insulation for households on qualifying benefits, and technically the scheme is material-agnostic, it funds the measure, not the product. In practice, most ECO4 installers default to mineral wool or EPS because that's what their supply chains and PAS 2035 assessments are built around. You can ask specifically for a wood fibre install, but you may need to top up the difference yourself or find a specialist installer registered under the scheme. We've covered ECO4 eligibility in detail separately, the key thing here is that wood fibre is possible but not the default.
Warm Homes: Local Grant, which replaced the Home Upgrade Grant, is administered by local authorities and runs to March 2028. Some councils, particularly in areas with lots of listed and pre-1919 stock like Cornwall, Somerset, and parts of Yorkshire, are more open to breathable materials because their housing officers understand the problem with sealing up old walls. Bristol and Norwich have both funded wood fibre installs through their local delivery partners. Others will steer you firmly toward standard measures.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme doesn't fund insulation directly, but if you're planning a heat pump install, insulation upgrades often need to happen first to make the system work efficiently. Some installers will bundle both.
If your property is listed or in a conservation area, you're in a stronger position. Local authorities are generally more willing to fund breathable insulation on protected buildings because standard PIR would fail planning or listed building consent. Ask specifically about conservation grants alongside the main scheme.

Pre-1919 solid wall properties, timber-framed homes, and listed buildings benefit most. Modern cavity wall homes usually don't need it.
The rule of thumb: if your walls were built to breathe, use materials that let them breathe.
Solid stone or brick walls (typically pre-1919): wood fibre is often the right answer for internal wall insulation. Standard PIR with plastic vapour barriers can trap moisture between the insulation and the original wall, causing damp problems that are expensive to fix. We've seen enough failed internal wall retrofits to know this isn't theoretical.
Timber-framed homes, both historical oak frames and modern timber-frame kit builds, benefit from wood fibre's moisture management. It moves vapour through the wall assembly rather than trapping it against the frame.
Listed buildings and conservation areas: often the only insulation option that gets planning approval, because it's reversible and doesn't damage historic fabric.
Cob, clay lump, and stone rubble construction: absolutely wood fibre or nothing. Modern insulation on these walls can destroy them within a decade.
Roofs on any property where you want to convert the loft: wood fibre between and under rafters creates a warm roof that manages condensation better than PIR, particularly on shallow-pitched roofs where ventilation is limited. Modern cavity-wall semis (1930s onwards): probably not worth it. Standard cavity fill or roof insulation upgrades will give you 90% of the benefit for a third of the cost. Save your money.
Anyway, the pattern is clear enough. Old buildings, use wood fibre. New buildings, use whatever's cheapest that meets building regs.
Look for PAS 2035 accreditation, membership of the AECB (Association for Environment Conscious Building), and specific project experience with breathable materials.
This is the bit where wood fibre gets harder. Availability of skilled installers is patchy. Roughly 200 to 300 firms across the UK specialise in breathable insulation systems, concentrated in the South West, Wales, and parts of Scotland where traditional building stock dominates. In the East Midlands, East Anglia, and the North East, you might have to bring someone in from further away.
Three things to check before you hire anyone:
Ask to see previous wood fibre projects, ideally on a property similar to yours. Photos of finished walls tell you nothing. Ask for the customer's contact details and phone them. Ask about condensation, cracking, and how the walls feel two winters after install.
Check their PAS 2035 assessor is separate from the installer. On grant-funded work this is mandatory. On private work it's still a good idea because it means someone independent has thought about moisture management in your specific building.
Get the specification in writing. Which product, what thickness, what breathable membrane, what render or plaster finish. Cheap wood fibre paired with a modern plastic-based render is a disaster waiting to happen. The whole wall assembly needs to be vapour-open, top to bottom.
Honestly, if you can't find an installer who can talk fluently about vapour permeability and lime plaster, keep looking. There are plenty of firms who'll happily install wood fibre boards the same way they install PIR, and it won't work.
Material suppliers like Ecological Building Systems, Back to Earth, and Mike Wye all publish installer directories on their websites. Start there rather than a general trades directory. The National Federation of Roofing Contractors also lists breathable insulation specialists for roof work.
Expect to wait. Good installers are booked three to six months out, longer in summer. If someone can start next week, that's a warning sign, not a win.
