Why we're here
How UK energy grants work in 2026
Three government schemes fund home energy upgrades in 2026. One of them might cover the entire cost.
Between them, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), ECO4 and the Warm Homes Local Grant pay towards solar panels, heat pumps, insulation and boiler replacements across England, Scotland and Wales. Some households get their upgrades fully funded. Others get £7,500 off a heat pump. The size of the cheque depends on your EPC rating, your income, any benefits you receive and the property you live in.
Zero cost. Fully funded. If you qualify.
ECO4 is the most generous scheme but has the strictest eligibility. It's delivered through energy suppliers like British Gas and Octopus, and it targets homes in lower EPC bands where the occupants receive qualifying benefits. If you're in the right bracket, ECO4 can pay for insulation, a new heating system and ventilation in the same installation. The catch is the paperwork: income-tested, documentation-heavy and slower to confirm than the other two.
BUS is the easier route. No income test, no benefits check. You swap a fossil fuel boiler for a heat pump, and the government takes £7,500 off the invoice. Your MCS-certified installer handles the application. You just see the reduced quote.
The Warm Homes Local Grant sits between the two. Councils run it, funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and it pays for insulation and low-carbon heating in homes rated EPC D to G where the household is on a lower income. Coverage is patchy. Some councils are processing applications in weeks. Others have a waiting list.
The deadlines are worth knowing. ECO4 closes on 31 December 2026. BUS is confirmed until March 2028. The Warm Homes Local Grant is funded through to 2028. Not tomorrow. Not forever either.

Your EPC rating
What each EPC band qualifies for
Your EPC rating is the single biggest factor in which grants you can apply for. It decides whether you're eligible for the most generous schemes, the partial ones, or neither. Here's the short version.
| Your EPC band | What you can access |
|---|---|
| A–C | BUS (£7,500 heat pump grant), 0% VAT on solar and insulation |
| D | All of the above, plus the Warm Homes Local Grant |
| E–G | All of the above, plus ECO4 (potentially fully funded) |
