An uninsulated hot water pipe loses roughly 70% of its heat before the water reaches your tap. Every metre of exposed copper is a small radiator warming your loft, your under-stairs cupboard, or the void behind your kitchen units. The Energy Saving Trust estimates a typical household can save £15 to £40 a year on heating bills just by lagging accessible pipes.
Sounds small. It is, on its own.
But here's the thing about pipe insulation. It costs about £30 in materials for a whole house. The payback is usually under a year, and after that it just keeps saving, quietly, for the next 20 years. There's almost no other energy upgrade with that ratio.
And the frozen pipe angle matters too. A single burst pipe in a cold snap costs an average of £7,000 to put right once you factor in ceiling damage, flooring, and the insurance excess. Lagging your loft pipes and any pipes in unheated outbuildings is basic risk management, not just an efficiency measure.
We see a lot of homeowners spending thousands on new boilers or heat pumps while leaving three metres of bare copper pipe behind the airing cupboard door. It's the most obvious win in the house and the most commonly ignored one.
Any pipe carrying hot water through an unheated space, plus any pipe at risk of freezing. That's the short answer. In practice, it means five areas: the loft, under suspended floors, the garage, any outbuildings, and the run between your boiler and hot water cylinder.
The hot water primary pipes (the ones between your boiler and cylinder) are the biggest single win. These carry water at around 70°C and are usually within a metre or two of the boiler, in an airing cupboard or utility room that isn't heated. Lag these first.
Next, loft pipes. Cold water tanks in the loft feed pipes that run across ceiling joists. If those freeze in January, you're looking at a very expensive February. Every metre of pipe in the loft needs lagging, and the tank itself needs a jacket.
Outdoor taps and the pipes feeding them are the third priority. A frost-proof outdoor tap helps, but the internal pipe run to it still needs insulation.
Beyond those three, also look at pipes in the garage, pipes in underfloor voids (accessible via a hatch or during other work), and any exposed pipes on external walls. Central heating flow and return pipes running through unheated areas benefit too, though the gain is smaller because those pipes are usually short.
One thing worth mentioning. Modern combi boilers don't have a hot water cylinder, so the primary pipe run is much shorter. If you've got a combi, focus on the loft and any exposed pipework in cold spaces. If you've got a system or regular boiler with a cylinder, the airing cupboard is your priority.
Foam tube lagging is the right choice for 95% of homes. It's cheap, easy to fit, and lasts decades. Everything else is a specialist choice for a specific situation.
Foam lagging (usually polyethylene or nitrile rubber) comes in pre-slit tubes that snap over existing pipes. You buy it by pipe diameter, 15mm and 22mm are the standard UK sizes, and by wall thickness. Thicker foam insulates better but is harder to fit in tight spaces. For most homes, 13mm or 19mm wall thickness is the sweet spot. A 2-metre length costs £2 to £4 at any builders merchant.
Mineral wool wrap is the traditional option, still used on larger pipes and industrial applications. You wrap it around the pipe and secure with tape or wire. It insulates slightly better than foam per millimetre of thickness, and it's fire-resistant, but it's fiddly to fit and can sag over time. Worth considering for the primary flow and return pipes near a boiler where temperatures are higher.
Beyond those two, the market also includes armaflex-style rubber insulation (used for cold water pipes at risk of condensation), external pipe insulation with weatherproof outer skins for pipes running outside, and specialist high-temperature products for solar thermal or biomass systems. Availability varies and most homes never need these.
External pipe insulation deserves a separate note. If you've got a heat pump, the flow and return pipes between the outdoor unit and your house often run externally for a metre or two. These need UV-resistant, weatherproof lagging, usually pre-formed with a plastic or aluminium outer jacket. Ask your installer to fit this properly. Cheap foam lagging degrades in sunlight within two years.
Here's what most guides won't tell you. The insulation is only as good as the joints. If you leave 5cm gaps at every elbow and T-junction because it's fiddly to cut, you'll lose most of the benefit. Use foil tape to seal the ends and buy pre-formed elbow pieces for the corners, or cut mitres yourself with a sharp knife. This is the difference between a job that saves £40 a year and one that saves £10.
Pipe insulation on its own is rarely funded because it's too cheap to bother administering as a standalone grant. It gets funded as part of a bigger package.
ECO4 is the main route. If you're on qualifying benefits (Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, and several others) and your home has an EPC rating of D or worse, ECO4 can fund a full heating and insulation upgrade. Pipe lagging is included as standard alongside boiler replacement, loft insulation, or cavity wall work. You won't get pipe insulation alone, but you'll get it free as part of the wider job. Warm Homes: Local Grant is the newer scheme, running until March 2028 and administered by local authorities. Amounts vary by council. Some councils treat pipe insulation as an included measure when doing loft or heating upgrades. Others don't. Check with your local authority directly. Cornwall and Manchester have been particularly active in recent rounds. Rural Norfolk, less so.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (£7,500 for an air-to-water heat pump, £9,000 if you're replacing oil off the gas grid until March 2027) doesn't fund pipe insulation directly, but any MCS-certified installer fitting a heat pump will lag the pipework as part of the install. It's built into the quote. If your installer leaves you with bare pipes running from the outdoor unit, ask why.
The Great British Insulation Scheme closed in March 2026. If you applied before then and work is still scheduled, pipe lagging may be included. It's not a route for new applicants.
Honestly, if you're just after pipe insulation on its own, don't bother with grants. Buy the foam, spend an afternoon fitting it, done. The admin cost of applying outweighs the material cost.

DIY is genuinely the right call here for most people. Pipe lagging is one of the few home energy jobs where a homeowner can do a better job than a rushed contractor, because you can take the time to seal every joint properly.
Materials for a typical three-bed semi cost £15 to £50, depending on how much pipework is accessible. You'll need pre-slit foam tubes (buy 22mm and 15mm to cover both common pipe sizes), a sharp Stanley knife, foil tape, and about two hours. That's it. No tools you don't already own.
The method is simple. Measure the pipe run, cut the foam to length, open the slit, snap it over the pipe. At elbows, either buy pre-formed elbow pieces or cut two 45-degree mitres and tape them together. At T-junctions, cut a wedge out of one piece to sit against the branch. Seal every join with foil tape.
Where it gets harder is inaccessible pipework. Pipes under suspended floors, inside stud walls, or above bathroom ceilings. Leave those alone unless the floor's already up for other work. It's not worth pulling up carpets and boards for £5 of heat savings a year.
Professional installation costs £200 to £400 for a full house, mostly labour. You'd only pay this if you're getting other work done at the same time (a heating upgrade, say) and want the pipe lagging done properly as part of it, or if you have a lot of pipework in awkward loft spaces.
One more thing. If you have solid pipes running through masonry walls where they enter the airing cupboard, insulating just the exposed sections misses the heat loss inside the wall itself. Not much you can do about that without major work. Focus on what you can reach.
Pipe insulation is the finishing touch on almost every heating or insulation project. It's the £30 job that stops a £5,000 upgrade from underperforming.
With a heat pump, pipe lagging matters more than with a gas boiler. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures (typically 35°C to 55°C rather than 70°C), so any heat lost to a cold loft is a larger percentage of the total. If you're going down the heat pump route, insist on proper lagging on all primary pipes, flow and return, and any external pipe runs. With loft insulation, pipe lagging is essential and often overlooked. When you insulate a loft to 270mm, the loft becomes significantly colder in winter because you're no longer heating it via ceiling losses. Any water pipes up there are now much more likely to freeze. Lag them before or during the insulation work, not after the first cold snap.
With a new boiler, pipe insulation on the primary pipes maintains the boiler's efficiency ratings in real-world use. Manufacturers quote efficiency based on lab conditions with insulated pipework. Bare pipes drop real-world efficiency by 2 to 5 percentage points.
With a hot water cylinder upgrade, always fit a cylinder jacket if the tank doesn't already have one, plus lag the primary pipes into and out of it. This combination can save around £70 a year on its own.
One thing we see repeatedly. People spend six months researching whether to get a heat pump, then don't spend six minutes lagging the pipes in their airing cupboard. Do the easy bits first. Every home should have all accessible pipes lagged before spending money on anything else.
That's the honest bit. Pipe insulation is boring, cheap, and slightly annoying to fit around awkward corners. It also saves more per pound spent than nearly any other energy measure in the home. Buy the foam, spend an afternoon, and get on with the rest of your life.
