Yes, many terraced homes already use heat pumps for heating and hot water. The main challenges are limited outdoor space for the unit, proximity to neighbours and sometimes solid walls that lose heat faster than cavity-wall properties.
A heat pump works by transferring heat from outside air or the ground into water, which then circulates through radiators or underfloor heating. Planning rules in England typically require permitted development conditions to be met, including noise limits at the nearest neighbour's window. An MCS-certified installer should carry out a noise assessment as part of the design. Choosing a unit with a lower sound power level and positioning it carefully, for example on a rear wall away from bedroom windows, helps avoid disputes.

You must own the property (or be a landlord), use an MCS-certified installer and have the system commissioned within 120 days of applying. Most new-build and social housing properties are excluded. Is your electricity supply adequate? Most domestic heat pumps run on a standard single-phase supply, but older terraced houses with small consumer units may need an electrical upgrade.
What about planning permission? Most air-source heat pumps fall under permitted development in England, provided noise and placement conditions are met. Listed buildings or conservation areas may need formal planning consent.
Getting at least three quotes from MCS-certified installers gives you a realistic picture of costs and system design for your specific property. Each installer should carry out a heat loss calculation rather than estimating from bedroom count alone.
