The panel generates DC electricity, the micro-inverter converts it to AC, and it flows straight into your home's ring main. Whatever appliance is drawing power at that moment uses it first.
Think of it as a tiny power station that quietly reduces your import from the grid.
Most kits sold in the UK sit between 300W and 800W. That's roughly one or two panels, mounted on a balcony, a shed roof, a garden frame, or occasionally a south-facing wall. No scaffolding. No roof work. No electrician needed for the panel itself, though we'll come back to that.
In Germany they're called Balkonkraftwerk, or "balcony power stations," and about 1.5 million have been installed since 2023 after the government made them explicitly legal up to 800W. The UK hasn't followed suit yet, which is where things get interesting.
Here's the honest bit. A plug in panel is not a replacement for rooftop solar. It's a supplement, or a starter kit, or a solution for renters and flat-dwellers who can't drill into a landlord's roof. But for the right person, in the right situation, they can pay for themselves in three to six years. That's not nothing.
A single 400W plug in panel saves the average UK household £60 to £120 a year. An 800W setup pushes that to around £150.
The maths is simple, but the assumptions matter. A 400W panel in the UK generates roughly 340 to 380 kWh a year, depending on location, orientation, and shading. Cornwall does better than Cumbria. South-facing beats east-facing by about 20%.
At October 2025 energy prices, the domestic unit rate sits around 27p per kWh. If you use 100% of what the panel generates, that's £92 to £103 a year in savings from a single panel. Real-world usage is usually 70% to 85%, because you're not always home when the sun's out.

Here's what most guides won't tell you. If you export surplus electricity to the grid, you get nothing for it. Zero.
Rooftop solar owners get paid through the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays 3p to 15p per exported kWh depending on your supplier. Plug in solar isn't eligible for SEG, because SEG requires MCS certification on the installation, and you cannot MCS-certify a socket-connected panel. So any electricity you generate but don't use goes back to the grid for free, and your neighbours get to use your sunshine.
Which means the payback maths hinges on one thing: how much of the electricity you actually use as it's being generated. If you work from home and can run the dishwasher, washing machine, and kettle during the day, savings tip toward the top of the range. If you're out from 7am to 7pm, they don't.
A cheap plug-in timer socket helps. So does a smart plug that switches on high-draw appliances when your energy monitor shows the panel producing.
Yes, but with a twist. It's legal to buy one and legal to own one, but no UK electrician will formally certify the installation, and the DNO grid connection rules technically require prior notification.
That gap between "legal to buy" and "legal to plug in" is where the whole UK plug in solar market lives right now.
The Engineering Recommendation G98, published by the Energy Networks Association, is the rule that governs small generation equipment connecting to the low-voltage grid. G98 requires that any generation device be notified to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before or shortly after connection, and that the inverter meets G98 type-testing standards.
Most micro-inverters sold with UK plug in kits do meet G98. Reputable UK retailers like Sunology, Plug-In Solar UK, and Solarbotanic will only sell you a kit with a G98-compliant inverter. So the equipment side is fine.
The grey area is the socket connection. UK wiring regulations (BS 7671) don't explicitly permit or ban feeding electricity into a domestic ring main through a plug. Feeding power into a socket sits in a legal grey zone that no regulator has bothered to formally resolve, mostly because the numbers involved are so low.
Which means, in practice: thousands of UK households have plug in solar and nothing bad has happened, but if you had a fire and your insurer discovered an uncertified generation device connected to your ring main, you might have a claim rejected. That's the risk. It's small, but it's real.
A proper installation via a Part P registered electrician, with a dedicated fused spur rather than a plug, brings the whole setup fully into compliance. Expect to pay £150 to £300 on top of the kit cost. For anyone planning to stay in the house long-term, we'd do it. For a renter with an 800W kit on a balcony, probably not.
One more thing. The government has been vaguely reviewing plug in solar rules since 2024. Nothing has moved yet. If the UK follows Germany's lead and formally permits socket-connected solar up to 800W, the market will explode overnight.
Rooftop solar wins on every metric except one: upfront cost.
A 4kW rooftop system generates around 3,400 kWh a year, qualifies for 0% VAT and SEG payments, and typically saves £600 to £900 annually. It costs £5,000 to £7,000 installed. Payback is six to nine years, and the system lasts 25+ years.
An 800W plug in system generates 700 kWh a year, saves £130 to £180, and costs £600 to £1,200. Payback is three to five years. Panels last 20 to 25 years, but the micro-inverter may need replacing at year 10 to 15.
So who is plug in solar actually for?
Renters. You can take it with you when you move. Rooftop solar on a rented property is essentially impossible.
Flat-dwellers with a balcony. No roof access, but a south or west-facing balcony is fine.
Anyone testing the waters. Spend £600 to see what solar feels like before committing £6,000 to a full system.
Homes with unsuitable roofs. North-facing, heavily shaded, or already covered in Velux windows. A garden-mounted plug in kit sidesteps the roof entirely.
If you own your home and have a south, east, or west-facing roof with reasonable pitch and minimal shading, don't bother with plug in solar. Go straight to rooftop. But if you're in the other camp, plug in makes sense. Just go in knowing what you're buying: a modest supplement, not a solution.
Not for plug in solar, no. Every UK grant scheme requires MCS-certified installation, which plug in kits can't get.
That's the short answer. Here's the longer one.
Rooftop solar can be fully funded through ECO4 if you're on qualifying benefits like Universal Credit or Pension Credit and your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G. ECO4 is open until December 2026 and typically covers the entire installation cost for eligible households. It's the closest thing to "free solar panels" that actually exists.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme pays £7,500 toward an air-source heat pump but doesn't cover solar. Different scheme, different purpose.
The Warm Homes: Local Grant runs through local authorities until March 2028 and covers a mix of insulation and low-carbon heating measures. A few councils are including solar within their allocation. Check with yours directly. Cornwall, Bristol, and several London boroughs have been particularly active on solar within their local schemes.
And 0% VAT on domestic solar installations runs until 31 March 2027, saving you £1,000 to £1,500 on a typical 4kW system. This is automatic, applied by the installer, no forms.
None of these apply to plug in solar. You pay full retail, no VAT relief, no grant, no SEG.
If you're on benefits and eligible for ECO4, we'd genuinely recommend skipping plug in solar and going through the eligibility checker for a full rooftop system. It's a better outcome by every measure.
Six things, roughly in order of importance.
G98-compliant micro-inverter. Non-negotiable. Ask the seller for the G98 type-test certificate. If they can't produce it, walk away. Cheap Chinese kits on Amazon often use non-compliant inverters that could technically damage your neighbours' equipment.
Panel wattage vs your usage. A single 400W panel suits a low-usage flat. A 1.6kW four-panel setup only makes sense if you have both the space and the daytime consumption to soak up the output. Otherwise you're generating electricity for the grid to steal.
Mounting solution. Balcony rails, ground frames, and shed roofs are all fine. Wall-mounting on brickwork needs proper brackets and, ideally, a structural check. Don't zip-tie a solar panel to a fence and call it a day.
Socket rating, cable length, and weather protection also matter. Most UK kits come with a 5m to 10m outdoor-rated cable, which is usually enough to reach an internal socket via an external weatherproof fitting.
DNO notification. Technically required under G98. In practice, almost nobody does it for sub-800W setups. Your call. If you want to be fully compliant, your DNO's website has a G98 notification form that takes ten minutes.
Insurance disclosure. Tell your home insurer. Some don't care. Some will note it on the policy. A few will require a Part P electrician's certificate. Finding out after a claim is the worst possible time.
Warranty and UK support. Panel warranties are usually 20 to 25 years on output. Inverters get 10 to 15. Buy from a UK-based retailer with a UK address, not a drop-shipper. When something breaks in year seven, you want a real company to email.
Anyway, that's the checklist. Plug in solar isn't a scam and it isn't a magic bullet. It's a modest, sensible bit of kit for people who can't do full rooftop solar for whatever reason. Just go in with your eyes open, buy from a reputable seller, and don't expect miracles from 400 watts on a balcony in Manchester in February.
