Ground mounted solar panels sit on frames fixed into the earth rather than on your roof. They generate electricity in the same way as roof-mounted panels, using photovoltaic cells to convert sunlight into usable power. The key difference is location: because the array stands in your garden or on open land, you can choose the exact orientation and tilt angle for your site.
Ground mounting is worth considering when a roof is north-facing, heavily shaded, too small or structurally unsuitable for panels. A ground array may be an alternative where roof work is unsuitable, but listed-building and planning restrictions still need checking. You also need sufficient unshaded ground.
Two main frame types exist. Fixed-tilt frames bolt onto concrete foundations or ground screws and hold panels at a set angle, at an angle selected for the site. Tracking systems use motors to follow the sun across the sky, increasing annual output but adding mechanical complexity and cost.
Costs vary widely depending on system size, ground conditions and frame type. The figures below are illustrative budgeting examples only, not current market quotes. Actual prices depend on your installer, site survey and chosen equipment.

These figures assume typical UK residential installations with standard ground conditions. Rocky or waterlogged ground, long cable runs to the consumer unit, or the need for a concrete base can push costs higher. All figures include 0% VAT on qualifying installed energy-saving materials, which applies through 31 March 2027; the rate is then scheduled to rise to 5% (GOV.UK VAT guidance). Supply-only materials purchased for DIY installation do not automatically qualify for zero VAT.
The premium over roof mounting comes from the frame structure, groundworks and longer cable runs. If your roof is suitable, roof mounting is usually cheaper per kilowatt. Ground mounting makes financial sense when a roof installation is impossible or would produce significantly less electricity due to shading or orientation.
No single grant is designed specifically for ground mounted solar panels, but several schemes can include solar PV as an eligible measure.
ECO4 runs until 31 December 2026 and is delivered through energy suppliers. Solar PV can be installed under ECO4 as part of a package of measures for eligible households. Eligibility depends on your home's tenure, EPC rating and whether you or someone in your household receives a qualifying benefit. ECO4 Flex is a council referral route, not a guaranteed funding stream. Your supplier and local authority determine which measures are funded (Ofgem ECO4 guidance).
The Warm Homes Local Grant covers private homes in England rated EPC D to G, usually where household income is at most £36,000. Qualifying benefits or postcodes can provide alternative routes. Council surveys and available funding determine which improvements are offered. Solar panels may be included where the council and delivery partner identify them as appropriate. A national application portal exists at GOV.UK. Funding delivery runs to March 2028.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is not a capital grant but pays you for surplus electricity exported to the grid. Licensed suppliers with 150,000 or more customers must offer at least one SEG tariff above zero. Rates vary between suppliers and are not set by the government, so comparing offers is important. Ground mounted systems can qualify when they meet scheme and supplier requirements, including accepted installation certification and suitable export metering (Ofgem SEG guidance).
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides grants for heat pumps and biomass boilers, not for solar PV installations. It is not relevant to a ground mounted solar project on its own.

Performance depends on orientation, tilt and shading rather than whether panels are on a roof or the ground. A well-sited ground array can outperform a compromised roof installation.

The Energy Saving Trust notes that site-specific estimates depend on roof (or ground) orientation, system size and how much electricity you use yourself rather than exporting (Energy Saving Trust solar calculator). The same principle applies to ground arrays: compare the value of avoided imports with the export tariff and any storage costs. The best use of generated electricity depends on those rates and your consumption pattern.
Small domestic standalone arrays in England may qualify as permitted development, subject to size, siting and other conditions. The limits include a panel area no greater than 9 square metres and an array no greater than 3 metres wide by 3 metres deep; heritage restrictions and other conditions also matter. Larger arrays can require a planning application.
Do not treat a conservation area as an automatic blanket ban or assume listed-building consent is unnecessary. Ask the local planning authority to check the actual layout before ordering equipment. Westminster City Council’s solar planning guidance illustrates the English rules and when prior approval can be relevant. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate rules.
Ask the installer to identify the necessary electrical certification, network notification or permission and any building-control requirements. Planning permission and electrical compliance are separate checks.

If your roof is south-facing, unshaded and structurally sound, roof mounting will almost always be cheaper and simpler.
