30kW Combi Boiler: Is It the Right Size?

What Does a 30kW Combi Boiler Actually Do?

A 30kW combi boiler provides central heating and hot water from one unit. The "30kW" figure refers to the boiler's heat output, measured in kilowatts. The model name may refer to domestic hot-water output. Check the separate central-heating maximum and minimum output in the manufacturer data sheet, because these need not match the headline rating.

Combi boilers do not need a separate hot water cylinder or cold water tank in the loft. Cold mains water enters the boiler, passes through a heat exchanger and comes out hot at the tap. When you turn on the central heating, the boiler diverts heat to your radiators instead.

This design makes combis popular in smaller and medium-sized homes where space is limited. Suitability still depends on the heating and hot-water requirements of the household.

Is a 30kW Combi Boiler the Right Size for Your Home?

Choosing the correct output depends on your home's heat loss. A qualified heating engineer calculates heat loss by looking at wall construction, insulation levels, window area, ceiling height and the number of radiators.

Check peak room-by-room heat loss against the central-heating output range, and check hot-water flow at a stated temperature rise against your expected simultaneous demand. Radiator count and bedroom count are not reliable sizing rules. Multiple outlets may require a different combi or a stored-hot-water system, depending on mains flow and the model.

Conversely, fitting a boiler that is too large for your home wastes energy. An oversized boiler cycles on and off more frequently, reducing efficiency and increasing wear. A proper heat-loss calculation, which any Gas Safe registered installer should carry out before quoting, is the only reliable way to confirm the right size.

Improving your home's insulation before replacing a boiler can reduce the output you need. The Energy Saving Trust recommends 270mm of mineral wool loft insulation as a standard depth, and better insulation means a smaller, cheaper boiler may suffice.

How Much Does a 30kW Combi Boiler Cost?

Boiler prices vary by brand, model and installer. No single figure applies to every household. The following table is a clearly illustrative budgeting example, not a current market quote. The assumed ranges are based on the typical components of a like-for-like gas combi replacement and are intended only to help you compare quotes.

Important caveats: Moving a boiler to a new location, converting from a system or regular boiler, or upgrading the gas supply can add significantly to the cost. These figures assume a simple swap where the new boiler connects to existing pipework and the flue exits through an existing route. Always obtain at least three written quotes from Gas Safe registered installers so you can compare like with like.

The HMRC relief for qualifying energy-saving materials must not be applied automatically to a gas combi replacement. Ask for the applicable VAT rate on the written quote. Any separate relief depends on its own conditions.

Which Brands Make 30kW Combi Boilers?

Several manufacturers produce 30kW (or near-30kW) combi boilers sold in the UK. Common names include Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal, Baxi and Viessmann. Each offers models at different price points, with varying efficiency ratings and warranty terms.

When comparing models, focus on:

• ErP efficiency rating. All new gas combis sold in the UK carry an energy label. Most modern condensing combis achieve an A rating (above 90% efficiency under test conditions).
• Hot water flow rate. A higher flow rate means better performance at the tap. Check the litres-per-minute figure at a 35°C temperature rise, so that model comparisons use the same test condition; actual incoming water temperature varies.
• Warranty length and conditions. Warranties typically require annual servicing by a qualified engineer. Some manufacturers also require the installer to be an approved partner for the full warranty to apply. Read the conditions before assuming coverage.
• Physical dimensions. If your boiler sits in a kitchen cupboard, measure the space carefully. Compact models exist but may cost more.

Can You Get a Grant Towards a Boiler?

Grant funding for gas boiler replacements is limited. Two main routes may apply, plus a local grant programme.

ECO4

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) runs until 31 December 2026. It funds energy efficiency measures, which can include boiler replacements, for households that meet specific eligibility criteria. Eligibility depends on your home's tenure, its EPC rating and whether someone in the household receives a qualifying benefit. ECO4 Flex is a council referral route for households that do not receive qualifying benefits but meet local criteria such as low income or vulnerability.

Funding is not guaranteed even if you meet the eligibility criteria. The measures offered depend on what the energy supplier's assessment identifies as appropriate for your property. Boiler Upgrade Scheme (heat pump alternative)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) does not fund gas boiler replacements. It provides grants for low-carbon heating systems in England and Wales. If you are considering replacing your gas boiler with a heat pump rather than another gas combi, the BUS offers £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground-source heat pump. Off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG heating can receive £9,000 (this uplift is available until March 2027). BUS funding is confirmed through fiscal year 2029/30. An MCS-certified installer must carry out the work, and the installation must be commissioned within 120 days of applying.

Warm Homes Local Grant

The Warm Homes Local Grant (England only) funds energy efficiency improvements for private homes rated EPC D to G, usually where household income is at most £36,000. Qualifying benefits or postcodes can provide alternative routes. It does not fund a new gas or oil boiler. Suitable low-carbon heating and insulation may be offered following the council assessment. Funding delivery runs to March 2028.

How to Find a Reliable Installer

Any engineer who works on a gas boiler must be on the Gas Safe Register. This is a legal requirement in the UK. You can verify an engineer's registration at the Gas Safe Register website by entering their ID number.

Practical steps when choosing an installer:

1. Get at least three written quotes. Each should itemise the boiler model, labour, ancillaries and VAT. A single quote gives you no basis for comparison.
2. Ask about the heat-loss calculation. A good installer will assess your home's heat loss before recommending a boiler size. If someone quotes purely on bedroom count, that is a warning sign.
3. Check the warranty conditions. Some manufacturers require the installer to be an approved or accredited partner for the full warranty to apply.
4. Confirm the commissioning process. The boiler must be commissioned according to the manufacturer's instructions and the relevant commissioning record completed. Ask how the applicable building regulations notification or approval will be handled.
5. Ask about controls. Ask the installer to specify controls that meet the rules applicable in your country and to your work. Do not assume one UK-wide package applies to every installation.

Is a 30kW Combi Boiler Still a Good Choice?

For a typical UK home with one bathroom and moderate heating demand, a 30kW combi remains a practical option. It is compact, eliminates the need for a hot water cylinder and delivers hot water on demand.

The main limitations are hot water flow rate (only one outlet at a time performs well) and the fact that gas boilers will eventually need to be replaced by low-carbon alternatives as the UK moves towards net zero. If your current boiler is working but inefficient, improving insulation first may be more cost-effective than an immediate replacement. If replacement is unavoidable, compare a correctly designed combi installation with suitable alternatives and check servicing and warranty terms.
